42nd Street Moon

A Letter from the new Interim Artistic Director, Cindy Goldfield-

Greetings and Salutations!

It is an incredible thrill and honor to be charged with leading this new phase of 42nd Street Moon, a company that has meant so much to me over the years. Greg MacKellan and Stephanie Rhoads brought me into the Moon beam during the company’s very first season, in 1993, with their production of Sweet Adeline, where I played Dot the Piccolo Player. My hilariously titled solo was "Play Us Another Polka, Dot!" From that first season, I knew I had found an artistic home here at Moon.

During the subsequent 30 years, I have served as a performer, choreographer, costumer, prop designer, wig designer, director and gala producer. This new position feels like a natural fit, and I am delighted to be here with you! Many thanks and love to Daniel for welcoming me, and smoothing the transition.

~

Last night I had the strangest dream. In some ways, it was a classic actor’s nightmare, where you are expected to perform but something makes it impossible to do your job. In my dream last night, I was supposed to be the understudy for the musicians for a show (which in reality, is ludicrous because I don’t actually play anything other than the occasional washboard) and I was holding a funny multi-faceted instrument that was part clarinet-part oboe-part trumpet. I valiantly tried to look like I knew how to play it but inside was completely freaking out.

I think making theatre is actually much closer to the actors’ nightmare, than we like to admit. We create a world that is only real when we are in the light, speaking words made up by someone who we may never meet, trying to convey what we think their intent was when they wrote it…sometimes many years and experiences away from where we are today. Collaborating with other artists to create something beautiful that will move audiences to laugh or cry or fall in love or shake up their lives. It is an act of faith, made possible by the the subscribers and donors and single ticket buyers who sit in the dark and fall into this world with us. I admire, and feel honored to be a part of, this endeavor year after year, and feel such delight that all of you are a part of that endeavor too… in whatever way you do.

I am delighted about the magic that we are contemplating for next season’s programming…feeling excited and inspired by the stories and characters that we will bring you, the artistic teams that will alchemize text, music, design, movement, and vision into experiences that will delight, divert, entertain, and remind us of our humanity. All wrapped up in a happy ending or two.

We are in the process of getting all our
licensing and final approvals,
but in the MEANTIME,
I wanted to celebrate this new era
by inviting you all
on a "Blind Date" with Moon!

For now, the 24-25 Season is still a secret, BUT from now until midnight on May 19th, anyone who signs up, or renews, for a 24-25 Season Subscription can get 20% off, by using the code ROSES at check out. PLUS the first 30 people to subscribe will receive a 42nd St Moon branded wine tumbler!

We are planning a proper Season Announcement Party for the week of May 20th, and invitations will go out soon.

Until then, I look forward to seeing you for the last weekend of Forever Plaid, or for our last show of the 23-24 Season, (which I will be directing and choreographing,) Edie Brickell and Steve Martin’s Bright Star!

See you at the theater!
